What's the Problem? Software for Worded Maths Problems
I don’t know if you remember, but a little while ago we sent an email asking all schools if there were any software products they REALLY WANTED, an area or subject not covered adequately by any existing program?
In answer to your request we have worked with Michael Bawtree – a Maths teacher for over 35 years – to create the perfect program to support the teaching of Worded Problems in Maths!
The program is called What’s the Problem? and has some fantastic, unique features – the best of which (we think) is that the numbers used in the questions are randomly generated each time the program is run – which means that your pupils cannot simply ‘remember’ the answers, they have to remember the method of working them out, which is exactly what you want them to do!
Another brilliant feature is that there are graded levels of help – some children might just need a little prompt, others might need a bit more help and others a bit more still - you can demonstrate to the level you feel is required. We think that you will find these graduated hints a really useful feature.
There are twelve areas within the program –
Small Numbers: Plus/Minus/Times/Divide
Larger Numbers: Plus/Minus/Times/Divide
Even Larger Numbers: Plus/Minus/Times/Divide
Time 1: Plus/Minus/Times/Divide
Time 2: Plus/Minus/Times/Divide (more difficult, elapsed times can be greater than one hour)
Timetable: For Bus (short times) or Train (longer times)
AM/PM/24: Words into time and time into words
Digital Clock: Learn how to read/use a digital clock
Percentages: Easy, Not So Easy, Harder
Probability: Four levels of difficulty
Money: Plus/Minus/Times/Divide
Division: This screen is accessible from the Money screen when the Division option is selected
This is a perfect piece of software to use on Interactive Whiteboards, with clear, uncluttered screens, simple-to-use touch screens and lots of pictorial hints to suit all ages and abilities.
